Saussage and Cheese Salad (Switzerland)

A true classic of Swiss cuisine, the hearty Wurst-Käse-Salat (sausage and cheese salad) is beloved for its simplicity and satisfying flavors. Due to its ease of preparation and robust ingredients, this salad is a popular choice in Alpine huts, where hikers and skiers enjoy it as a quick, nourishing meal. Whether served with crusty bread or on its own, it’s a true taste of Switzerland!

Ingredients (Serves 4)
300g (11 oz) Swiss sausage (such as Cervelat or Lyoner)
200g (7 oz) Swiss cheese (like Emmental or Gruyère)
1 small onion
4-5 gherkins (pickles)
Fresh parsley
For the dressing:
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
4 tablespoons sunflower oil (or another mild vegetable oil)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the ingredients:
Peel and slice the sausage into thin rounds or strips.
Cut the cheese into thin strips.
Slice the onion and gherkins into rings or thin slices.
Make the dressing:
In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, oil, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper until well combined.
Assemble the salad:
In a large bowl, combine the sausage, cheese, onions, and gherkins.
Pour the dressing over the salad and toss everything together until the ingredients are well coated.
Chill and serve:
Let the salad sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Garnish with fresh parsley before serving, if desired.
